PASTOR'S UPDATE:
..a church is not a building--only. We Lutheran Christians believe the Church is to be found wherever the Gospel is purely taught and the Sacraments rightly administered. So, the people in our church are merely attempting to be what the Church is supposed to have been ever since it came into existence--faithful in our witness to God and His Word among our neighbors here in Manhattan. The church is the people of God, hearing the life-giving message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and living the new life of faith in Jesus Christ.
At Hope, we view each other as the neighbor that God has placed next to us in order to show our love to God as we serve that neighbor. So, we share our concerns for each other and for the unique needs of our neighbors in the Manhattan area through our individual lives and through our church's activities, one of which is our Early Learning Center. In God's commitment to us in Christ, we have a commitment to be channels of God's love to others, and this commitment shapes our services and programs.
One could probably call our approach to Sunday morning worship "traditional," (or maybe not; maybe you're one of those who's tired of just about everybody trying to "be outside the box," so that those who are comfortable with the best of the rich and deep history of the Christian church can maybe be thought of as the new "outside of the box" crowd...) yet we realize that we get to express our faith in very contemporary ways--both as individuals in the places where God has put each of us, and as a group. We can even say that Hope Lutheran Church is a "dynamic, growing fellowship," in the belief that the Gospel of Christ is the dynamo, generating life and growth where there had been only death and stagnation before. At Hope you will find real people who trust that Christ is their hope and who trust that Christ Himself makes good their otherwise imperfect commitment to our neighbors. A realistic view of who we are? Yes. An optimistic, idealistic view of who we are, in Christ? Absolutely.
There are many opportunities for participation. These opportunities include attending Christian education classes, Bible studies, service organizations, choirs, witnessing and worshipping every Sunday.
Hope is here to serve, to the best of our ability, the gospel of Jesus Christ to our neighbor. You are invited to share with us the energy and opportunities for spiritual and personal growth that are here. We believe you will find Hope Lutheran Church to be a deeply spiritual, caring community of believers in which you can know God Himself, in the face of Jesus.
