Will my child be ready for kindergarten? What should she be learning at this stage? Does he need something more than daycare?
We know these questions are on the minds and hearts of most parents of three to five year-olds and they are all good questions to ask. Hope Lutheran has the answers!
Child care and pre-kindergarten education go hand-in-hand. Positive relationships and social interactions are one, if not the most, important aspect of being “ready” for kindergarten. Our mixed age classrooms are key in developing social competence and kindergarten readiness. We set children up for success by providing a structured, predictable order of the day and an organized environment. This structure provides them with a sense of control and feeling of safety.
Within this structured environment, we prepare each preschool child in our care for kindergarten by using a research-based curriculum called HighScope. The HighScope Curriculum is based on active participatory learning. So, in both structured and unstructured activities, children are active participants — learning through play.
Research has shown that children learn best through play and are better prepared for kindergarten (and life) if allowed to explore, make mistakes, learn to take initiative, be innovative, and develop social skills such as knowing and handling their emotions. Therefore, our teachers observe the children to see where they are developmentally and to learn about their interests. Lesson plans are then tailored to the children’s developmental levels and interests. As each activity is carried out, teachers help children build on what they know. The children think of these experiences as “play,” but we consider them “work”! This “work,” combined with the social skills children learn within the safety of our structured environment, prepares the children in our preschool program for the next level of learning!
If you have a question about the program or would like to schedule a tour of the facility, please contact our center director. She’ll be happy to help!
