Through Scripture and song, we traced God’s promise to bring light into our world and into our hearts. Our service began with the account of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. After their disobedience, they hid from God, ashamed and afraid because they had sinned against God. This is the story of all humanity: we hide from God because of our sin, our selfishness, our failures, our brokenness. But even in that moment when Adam and Eve brought sin and all its effects into the world, God spoke a word of real hope. He promised that one day, a descendant of Eve would crush the serpent’s head, defeating sin and evil forever. This is the first gospel, the first good news. “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15) Centuries later, Isaiah prophesied, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light… For to us a child is born, to us a son is given… And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:2, 6) God’s promise was not forgotten. The Gospel writers tell us how that promise was fulfilled. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, announcing that she would give birth to the Son of God. In humble Bethlehem, Jesus was born. Not in a palace, but in a stable. Angels announced his birth to shepherds, saying, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” (Luke 2:10) Later, wise men from the East followed a star to worship the newborn King. And then John’s Gospel proclaims the great mystery and miracle: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory… full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) Jesus is God with us – Emmanuel – come to bring forgiveness, peace, and eternal life. For The Week Ahead Some Applications:
